Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral malpractices, such as vote-buying, ballot box snatching, voter intimidation, and falsification of results, are pervasive challenges in Nigerian elections. These practices undermine the integrity of the electoral process, erode public trust, and discourage active participation, particularly among the youth (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2024; Umar & Ahmed, 2025). Youths, who represent a significant proportion of the electorate, often find themselves both victims and perpetrators of electoral malpractices. In Jalingo Local Government, Taraba State, these issues are prevalent and have raised concerns about the future of youth participation in politics. While some youths are actively engaged in political processes, others are disillusioned by the lack of transparency and fairness in elections. Understanding the relationship between electoral malpractices and youth participation is critical to fostering a more inclusive and credible democratic process in Jalingo.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral malpractices have significantly hindered the participation of young people in politics, creating a cycle of disenfranchisement and political apathy. In Jalingo Local Government, the prevalence of vote-buying, intimidation, and violence has led to widespread disillusionment among youths, many of whom feel their votes do not count (Bello & Musa, 2024). Additionally, some youths are co-opted into perpetrating electoral malpractices due to unemployment and lack of opportunities, further perpetuating the problem. Despite numerous electoral reforms and advocacy efforts, the persistence of these issues suggests a need for deeper investigation into their root causes and consequences. This study seeks to examine the impact of electoral malpractices on youth participation in Jalingo, with the aim of identifying solutions to enhance their engagement in politics.
